YELLOWHEAD TIMBER TRADERS
is a small family business based out of North Central British Columbia.
Our focus is to cater to the High School Wood Shop programs.
We have wood in many schools throughout Western Canada. We cut all of our wood with the shop programs needs in mind. We cut our boards to 1.25“ and sell them in the rough dry state, so that the student s get the experience of shaving it down to size, while at the same time leaving lots of wood to meet a 15/16“ requirement.
Our local trees are large by Birch standards. Birch machines very well and falls between soft and hard maple in hardness. Birch is being recognized as a good substitute for maple in many applications such as furniture and flooring. Some of our flooring is in one of our local schools. It takes most stains well and is stainable to virtually any colour with the right brand of stain.
Birch does not support the salmonella bacteria and makes wonderful cutting boards and chopping blocks. (This is a good way to maximize the use of every last piece).
This project alone gives experience in table saw, edge gluing scroll saw as well as the power plane the thickness sander and the router to do the drip moat for the juices from the fish fowl or roast that you are cutting. Keep in mind that you can also shape the cutting board artistically by giving it the shape of a garlic clove, a salmon, a chicken, pig or what ever. Get the idea.
