Are you a suffering from Darcymania? |
1. Bookmark this website: The Pride and Prejudice Paradise and come back frequently. Just right click on the link above and select "add bookmark" or "add to favorites". (Yes, I had to put that in!)
2. Go to the library or bookstore, look up Jane Austen, and go READ THE ORIGINAL BOOK. (By the way, it's called Pride and Prejudice.) If you've already read it, reread it. If you haven't read it yet, you are missing out on a lot. There are lots of extra scenes and entertaining dialogue. There are also extra conversations between Lizzy and Darcy. Many details were missed out in the movie.
3.
Go to the library or bookstore
(the same one, if you like) and get
The Making of Pride and Prejudice by Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin.
This is a wonderful book that chronicles the production of our favourite movie from
beginning to end. It is humourous and interesting, has lots of pictures (including
"behind the scenes" photos) and contains a whole chapter dedicated to Colin Firth and
his approach to playing Darcy. For more info., check my product
information page.
4. Go to the library or bookstore (yes, again) and look for sequels to Pride and Prejudice. None of them are as good as the original, of course, but reading them may relieve some of your longing for more Elizabeth and Darcy. Watch out for the bad ones 'though. There are a few that are really not good at all (i.e., I don't recommend them). Have a look at Linda's Jane Austen Sequel page (at the Republic of Pemberley) or my sequels page for some reviews. If these do not satisfy you, then you can also read the many works of fanfiction that are posted at the Republic of Pemberley (Go to the "Bits of Ivory" section).
5. Try reading other Jane Austen books. You'll probably find them as entertaining as Pride and Prejudice. Here are some titles to get you started: Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion... and Northanger Abbey. (You know where to go to look for these novels - if not, see the first sentence of numbers 2, 3 and 4.)
6. If you don't feel like reading or have decided that reading takes more brainpower and time than you currently have to spare (since you probably used up all your time watching the 6 hours of P&P every day...), try watching some other movies based on Jane Austen's novels. Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet), Emma (Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam) and Persuasion (Amanda Root, Ciaran Hinds) are all charming movies. Older versions of Pride and Prejudice are also available. For more information, check out Jane Austen Film and Television Adaptations.
7. Download the Pride and Prejudice Desktop Theme, gaze at the included images and listen to the sounds clips over and over again. (Don't forget to customize your computer’s settings to show your obsession).
8.
Go and buy the Pride
and Prejudice soundtrack. Put it in your CD player.
Change the "play mode" to "repeat entire CD". Press play.
A recording of the dance music is also available. Buy it.
Follow the same procedure as noted above. More
information...
9. Get a copy of the documentaries that have been made about the movie: Perspectives on Pride and Prejudice and Pride and Prejudice: From Page to Screen. I have never seen either of these so if there's anyone out there who would like to share their copy or at least information on how to obtain a copy... please, please, please e-mail me and I will be eternally grateful. More information...
10. Buy the sheet music for the theme song of Pride and Prejudice (available in four versions: piano, violin and piano, flute and piano, clarinet and piano). If you don't know how to play the piano, learn. While you're at it, get a sibling or a friend to learn violin, flute and/or clarinet so you can play the duets together. If you prefer, you can get a copy of Jane Austen's world which has music not only from Pride and Prejudice but also the recent versions of Sense and Sensibility, Emma and Persuasion. More information...
So... There you have it.
Ten ways to relieve your longing.
I know it's not a complete
solution but it's a start!
